"One day through the Rosary and the Scapular I will save the world". These were the words spoken to Saint Dominic by the Blessed Virgin Mary in the year 1208 when she appeared to him.

Tradition tells that our Lady appeared to him while he prayed. The story is told that she spoke to him gently that day in the forest.

"My son," the Queen of Heaven said, "prayer and penance are the only way to win souls. Pray my Psalter and teach it to your people. That prayer, will never fail."

The word rosary in Latin means a garland of roses.

Tenner

During the Middle Ages in Europe, many of the prayer beads were made in the form of an open string instead of a closed loop. The word "tenner" refers to the ten beads used for a single decade rosary. A tenner was made with only ten Aves or Hail Mary beads and a Pater or Our Father bead and therefore was easy to conceal in the pocket or hand.
